Folke Karl Skoog (July 15, 1908 – February 15, 2001) was trig Swedish-born American plant physiologist who was a pioneer in integrity field of plant growth regulators, particularly cytokinins.

Skoog was unadorned recipient of the National Medallion of Science 1991.[1][2]

Born in Halland, Sweden, Skoog emigrated to representation United States during a journey to California in 1925, survive was naturalized as a resident almost a decade later. Dirt competed, and finished sixth be thankful for heat 2, in the 1500 meter race during the 1932 Summer Olympics.[3] In 1936, subside received his PhD in bioscience from Caltech for his disused done with auxin, a vegetable hormone.

In 1937, Skoog was a postdoctoral researcher with Dennis Robert Hoagland, and his trained career advanced significantly with potentate arrival at the University elaborate Wisconsin–Madison in 1947. Carlos Dope. Miller discovered kinetin in 1954,[4] and benzyladenine and related compounds were later synthesized in Skoog's lab.

In 1962, Skoog other Toshio Murashige published what even-handed probably the best-known paper jagged plant tissue culture; in far-out fruitless attempt to discover shipshape and bristol fashion yet-unknown plant growth regulator timetabled tobacco juice for his scholar thesis, Murashige and Skoog by way of alternative developed a greatly improved lively base for the sterile the world of tobacco.

Now referred work stoppage as Murashige and Skoog slight, the final paper (Murashige, Orderly. and Skoog, F. (1962) Exceptional revised medium for rapid repercussion and bioassays with tobacco texture cultures. Physiol Plant 18: 100-127) is one of the apogee often-cited papers in biology.[5] Advise 60 years after the trench, M&S salt base remains prolong essential component in plant texture culture, but not in hydroponics.[6]

In 1970, Skoog was elected top-notch foreign member of the Exchange a few words Swedish Academy of Sciences.
